A gangster is involved in the shooting of a policeman but apepars to have a perfect alibi as he was at the theatre with the daughter of another policeman at the time. The police try to crack the alaibi by using an undercover policeman acting as a drunk to infiltrate the gang. THis film has a better plot than most crime drama'a from the late 1920's and hence the reason for the Oscar nomination. Chester Morris got the Oscar nomination for best actor, though it is Regis Toomey who steals all the scenes he is in as the drunk undercover agent.
