A young man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is diagnosed with a rare cancer and he and his friend (Seth Rogan) cope with coming to terms with the diagnosis. The film also reflects the effect on his girlfrind (Bryce Dallas Howard) and family as well, with a level of humour running through it including his trainee therapist (Anna Kendrick).
