Clark Gable was the first of cinema's super stars being tall, handsom and macho which together with his performance as Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind has assured him of a place amongst the great film actors. He start his career in the theatre before moving to Hollywood and apperaing in a few silent films. his first sound film was The Painted Desert. He was signed by MGM and made films with Joan Crawford and Jean Harlow. He met Carole Lomabrd whilst making No Man Of Her own, they married whilst he was filing Gone WIth The Wind, and was married to her at the time of her death. In the early 1930's he had a charisma and sexuality. One of his more successful roles was in Frank Capra's It Happened One night with Claudette Colbert and for which he won an Oscar and showed he could play the comedy roles as well. His status as an actor continued to be established with films like Mutiny On The Bounty which gained him an Oscar nomination. He was then nicknamed King Of Hollywood. Then came his most well known film Gone With The Wind and his career defining role with the line "Frankly my dear , I don't give a damm". It was 8 Osacrs, but was only a nomination for Clark Gable. After Carol Lombard's death he joined the USAF for the duration of World War 2. It was with Magombo by John Ford, that he made a his next major film. He had a number of affairs with various co-stars before marrying his fifth wife. By the time he made RUn Silent Run Deep it was clear that his career was being overtakedn by a new generation of actors and his final film was The misfits.
