This is retelling of the story of the whaling ship the Essex that sailed out of Nantucket in 1819 and in the middle of the pacific Ocean was sunk by a whale. Some of the crew survive in the small whalers and then begin an epic journey to sail back to inhabited land. The story is told from the perspective of the youngest member of the crew (Charles Furness) in flash backs from Martin Sheen as the old man of the youngest boy on the ship who survived the ordeal. This is the story that was the inspiration to Herman Mellville's novel Moby Dick.
