In the mountains of northern California the life of a dysfunctional family is further disrupted by the arrival of a big cat killing their livestock and the girl friend (Diana Lynn) of the youngest son (Tab Hunter). The film is mainly about the family relationships which are dominated by the unpleasant mother (Beulah Bondi) and the manipulative older brother (Robert Mitchum). It is unusal in that it is filmed in colour in Cinemascope, but most of the scenes are actuall mainly in black and white, which gives a somewhat brooding atmosphere to the film.
