A saloon singer (Marlene Dietrich) with a penchant for creating bar fights, gets deported from yet another south sea island, and ends up on another island. with a bar run by a former assoociate of hers (Billy Gilbert). She attracts the attention of the American sailors on the island, in particular one officer (John Wayne) who becomes infatuated with her instead of the daughter (Anna Lee) of the governor. There are various strands of plot running through the film with various nefarious characters (Oskar Homolka) , but this is essentially a vehicle for Marlene Dietrich. Marlene Dietrich does what she does best, wearing a range of elegant outfits, looking sultry and singing with her trademark husky voice. There is good support from John Wayne as the sailor prepared to throw away his career for a beauitful but fallen woman, though Anna Lee and her character are under used, whilst the bar owner and gangster are very stereotyped. Watch for the performance from Marlene Dietrich.
