Comment
At the end of the 19th century Nicole Kidman is a young American who goes to Europe and inherits a fortune. She rejects the advances of Viggo Mortensen, but then she meets Barbara Hershey who introduces Nicole Kidman to her friend and lover John Malkovich in Florence. She is captivated by him and realises too late that Barbara Hershey and John Malkovich have ulterior motives. The performances from Nicole Kidman and Barbara Hershey are good and Jane Campion delivers a visually impressive film, with some good camera work and some unusal shots which are effective. The down sides are a flat performance from John Malkovich which does not match his character and some of the dialogue is a bit stilted.
