A woman whose life is controlled by her mother is sent to a sanitorium where she becomes an independent woman and whilst on a long cruise she falls in love with a married man. She goes on to discover that love and independence comes at an emotional price. Bette Davis gives an emotional roller coaster of a performance as she tries to find herself and love. Claude Rains gives a calm but powerful performance as the psychiatrist.
