A crooked businessman is shot dead and the case is investigated by a newspaper reporter. Spencer Tracy is the reporter who always seems one step ahead of the police in this emotional murder mystery that has a good twist at the end. This was Spencer Tracy's first film for MGM and he plays a more complex character than many of these 1930's newspaper based films. James Stewart has a very small role in this his first film.
