David Niven is a British pilot who is shot down in World War 2. He should have died, but the person due to take him to heaven cannot find him for 20 hours, during which time he falls in love with Kim Hunter. He then argues in a celestial court that he should be allowed to return to earth to live with his new love. This looks at life and death from a post war and surrealistic perspective. This is experimental for the time as it mixes black and white and colour, and life and death. Powell and Pressburger had been approached by the Ministry of Information to produce a film that would improve British / American relations and this was the film they produced. This film was selected for the first Royal Film Performnce.
