A woman who aspires raise herself from the hum drum life of being married to a country doctor embarks on affairs as a way of escape and spends money she does not have. Whilst the film is beaufitfully shot and Mia Wasikowska's dresses are sumptuous, the film is let down by the changes made to the story from the original book. This undermines the character of Emma Bovary.
