After his wife (Amy Irving) commits suicide and psychologist (Robert DeNiro) takes his young daughter (Dakota Fanning) away from the city to recover from the trauma, but things take sinister turn when her imaginary friend becomes distinctly unpleasant. This is a well produced film with the tension and shocks well distributed across the film and is held together by strong performances from Robert DeNiro becoming increasingly troubled and a young Dakota Fanning as his troubled daughter. The problems with the film are that the supporting roles from Famke Janssen and Elisabeth Shue are too small and the twist is revealed too early in the film. Despite this, the film is worth watching for the performance from Robert DeNiro in a dramatic role rather than the comedies he made around the same time.
