In 16th century Prague the Emporer issues an edict that the Jews have to leave their ghetto so the rabbi creates a giant creature to save them and brings it to life. This is one of the influencial German expressionist films from the early 1920's. Paul Wegener directs and is also the The Golem which has become the type of horror character tat has been used as the basis for many characters since.
