Comment
A high ranking civil servant working for the Chancellor of the Exchequer meets a young unemployed woman in a cafe. After meeting up for a couple of meals he invites her to join him at the G8 conference in Iceland. Whilst there their awkward relationship starts to develop, but at the same time she uses the opportunity to meet world leaders and challenge them over the Millenium Goals and child poverty. This is an unusual film in that it successfully manages to combine a romance between two people of different ages and a strong social and political statement. Bill Nighy is good as the gawky work obsessed batchelor intent on negotiating the compromise and Kelly Macdonald is good as the woman from a troubled background who grabs the opportunity to make a difference on a global scale despite the potential cost to both of them. This has a good script from Richard Curtis, good production and very well played performances from the actors.
