In the mid 1800's a young woman gets a job as a kitchen maid in a large house that runs a racing stable but after being seduced by one of the servants he leaves her pregnant when he runs off with the daughter of the house. She struggles to bring up her child and eventually meets the father again through the horse racing. The film has a curious mix of victorian morals, religious morality and an insite into horse racing and betting of the late 1800's. This was Dirk Bogarde's first major film role.
