Towards the end of the American civil war, a wounded soldier makes a perilous journey back to North Carolina to find the girl he loved before the war, whilst she struggles to run the family farm. Good performances from Nicole Kidman, Rene Zellweger and Jude Law lift this film above the average attempt to expose the unpleasant side of civil war.
