A young woman (Lily James) is brought up in a wealthy family, but after her mother (Hayley Atwell) dies, her father (Ben Chaplin) remarries and when he dies she is left living with her oppressive step mother (Cate Blanchett) and her two step sisters. When the prince (Richard Madden) of the land announces that he will hold a ball and chose his wife, everyone is invited, but Cinderella is not permitted to go by her step mother. Fortunately her fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) helps her out. This is a good lavish version of the Cinderella story that has beautiful sets and costumes and some of the shots pay homage to some earlier black and white versions of the story. The performances (except for Helena Bonham Carter) are comparatively flat, but that may be more to do with the direction than the ability of the actors. This leaves the film a bit too twee when it needed a little bit more of a darker edge to balance this, which seemed lacking from the step-mother and her daughters.
