Comment
A Parisian courtesan (Greta Garbo) in the middle of the 19th century has to choose between a rich Baron (Henry Daniel) wants her, but they are not in love and a poorer man (Robert Taylor) who loves her. The plot is deceptively simple, but what makes this film great is the combination of the acting, the production and the characters. At the heart of the film is the performance from Greta Garbo, in arguably one of her best performances as she brings her character to life. She is well supported by Robert Taylor as the innocent bemused young man smitten by her and Henry Daniell as the callous and abusive aristocrat. The production and cinematography help to show off all of Greta Garbo's talents and assets making this one of the classic films of unrequited love.
