A teenage London schoolgirl, whose parents are keen for her to go to Oxford University, has a chance meeting with an older man. He shows her a world of clubs, restaurants, clothes, Paris and sex, but it all comes at a price. This is a classic coming of age drama between an older man and a younger woman, told from the young woman's point of view and in a 1960's British setting with its social conventions. Nick Hornby has produced a good script and the film is well produced with a good performance from Carey Mulligan in the lead role and fine suupporting cast (Cara Seymour, Alfrd Molina, Olivia Williams). It is not surprising that it was nomination for best picture and Carey Mulligan was nominated for best actress at the Oscars.
