This is the classic Sci-Fi film with a screen play by Arthur C Clarke. This film is visually and musically stunning, even though it is very long and the plot is confusing, just sit back and soak in the atmosphere of the film. It is immersive and intuectually challenging, compared with many Sci-Fi films of the 1950's and 1960's and more recently. It has lots of themes beneath the story, not least the relationship between man and computer long before AI was a reality. It does explore the ideas of computer artificial intelligence and this isbased on the logic built into the computer. In this case it is how to complete the mission best, and Hal's logic is that it is without the humans.
