Kate Winslet has had success both from the critics and at the box office. Although she is most well known for her role in Titanic, it is in the less commercially successful films that she has demonstrated her full abilities as an actress including a superb performance in Revolutionary Road as well as good performances in Iris and Enigma. She was previously married to the director Sam Mendes. She came from an acting family and started acting in school plays before studing drama and appearing in some television roles. Her breakthrough role was in Heavenly Creatures. She followed this up with the historical drama Sense and Sensibility. her performancein only her second film role won her a Best supporting actress Oscar nomination. Her next role was the blockbuster Titanic that moved her up to being a major star and gained her a best actress Oscar nomination. It was a very physically demanding role on top of her acting. Enigma was move of a thriller in which she plays the less glamorous character. In Iris she plays a real person and takes on a difficult personality. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind was another complex character and gained her another Best Actress Oscar nomination. Romance and Cigarettes is a different style of film, slightly strange with some musical numbers. The Reader was a somewhat controversial film of the holocaust and won her the Best Actress Oscar nomination. She gives a good performance in the Australian film The Dressmaker. With Avatar: The Way of Water she returned to working to James Cameron and like in Titanic has to act in water.
