Career / Biography
Shirley Maclaine has had a long and successful career in films, featuring in a variety of styles of films from comedy to drama. She is the sister of Warren Beatty. As child she was a dancer and got the acting bug. After school she swent to New York and was then cast on Broadway. SHe was Spotted by Hollywood and signed by Paramount. Her first film role was in Alfred Hitchcock's Trouble With Harry. She then had a major role in the big budget Around The World In 80 Days with an ensamble cast. This was soon follwed by her Oscar nominated performance in Some Come Running. The Apartment directed by Billy Wilder is one of her most memorable films as she plays aopposite Jack Lemmon and had her second Oscar nomination. She teamed up with Jack Lemmon again for Irma Le Douce and had her third Oscar nomination as the French prostitute. In the mid 1960's she struggled to find good roles unot Bob Fossey cast her in the musical Sweet Charity, although it was not popular at the time. It did give her, the signature song, If My Friends Could See Me Now. After this she played less light hearted roles starting with Two Mules For Sister Sara by director Don Siegel with Clint Eastwood. SHe appeared in less films in the 1970's but came back with The Turning Point in 1977 for her fourth Oscar nomination opposir Anne Bancroft. For Being There with Peter Sellers she gained critical acclaim. Terms Of Endearment is perhaps her best known film and the one for which she finally won her Oscar. In her 50's she took on more mature roles which she embraced in films like Steel Magnolias and Postcard From The Edge. She continued to work in the 1990's and 2000's in films like In Her Shoes and a few episodes in Downton Abbey. Inot her 80's she was still making filmslike Elsa And Fred.
