Madeleine Carroll was a popular British actress in the 1930's and 1940's who started her career on stage and in silent films before making the transition to talkies, first in England and then later in Hollywood. She became a major star when she appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's version of The 39 Steps and she had a short marriage to Sterling Hayden.
