Career / Biography

Vincent Price was a British actor who was best know for his roles in various horror films though he appeared in a wider variety of films. He came from wealthy family and studied at Yale University and then moved to London and studied art. He was attracted to the theatre and after two play in London appeared on the Broadway stage. His firs film was Service de Luxe though his screen and speaking voice led him to period dramas starting with The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex. The House Of Seven Gables was his move into Gothic films. It was his role in Laura that brought him to being a major performer, which continued through the 1940's into roles like The Three Musketeers and several filmnoir films. The comedy Champagne for Caesar was an unusual change of style for him. House Of Wax was his first film into the horror genre and was very popular at the box office. In 1956 he worked with Fritz Lang in the film noir When The City Sleeps. His role in The Ten Commandments was very different as this was a different style of film. House On Haunted Hill was a move back into the horror genre. He then worked with American International Pictures and director Roger Corman to bring eight Edgar Allan Poe stories to the screen, starting with The Fall of The House Of Usher. His style and voice created a horror style that was successful for Roger Corman in America and then Amicus and Hammer in England. Witchfinder General was a powerful and frightening horror made in Britain that is one of Vincent Price's most unnerving performances. In his later career he appeared in a number of films and also did voice over work. His final film was TIm Buton's Edward Scissorhands. Outside of film, he provided the voice over to Michael Jackson album Thriller.
