Career / Biography
Sean Connery was the first James Bond (007) and for many he was the definitive James Bond. He also went on to star in a variety of other successful films from drama (Marnie, Name of The Rose) to action (Indiana Jones). He was married to Diane Cilento from 1963-1972.
He left school at 13 to start work and at 16 spent 3 years in the Royal Navy. He then became a model and then a body-builder before turning to acting. After various stage and television roles he appeared in minor roles in several British films before his first major role in Another Time, Another Place. In 1959 he appeared in the Disney film Darby O'Gill and the Little People where he plays an Irish man. In 1962 he was cast as James Bond in Dr No, which made him a major star. He changed from a rough Scotsman into a suave spy. This was intended as a one off and on a small budget, but its huge success led to the franchise. In from Russia With Love, Sean Connery's Bond character develops his particular characteristics. Without him the Bond franchise would not have existed. Whilst making the Bond films he stared in the Alfred Hitchcock film Marnie as he did not want to be typecast. The Hill was a very different but a strong role and a good acting performance. Diamonds Are Forever was his sixth Bond film before passing on the role. He then appeared in the ensemble film Murder On The Orient Express. He followed this with the John Huston film The Man Who Would Be King alongside Michael Caine. It was one his most favourite films to make.
This was followed by the historical drama Robin And Marion alongside Audrey Hepburn. The First Great Train Robbery was a Victorian heist movie that is slightly comic and Connery did his own stunts. Outland was a Sci-Fi thriller and then he reprised James Bond in never Say Never Again which was not part of the main franchise. One of his best performances has in the historical murder mystery The Name Of The Rose. It was for his role in The Untouchables that he won his only Oscar as best supporting actor. The Presidio was a good murder thriller. This was followed by his very much tongue in cheek performance as Harrison Ford's father in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. His other great performance was in The Hunt For Red October as the defecting Russian submarine captain. First Knight was a return to entertaining historical romance and then Entrapment was a fun romantic crime caper. He retired from acting in 2007.
